O long-awaited Divine Reality, reveal Yourself through a form my human eyes can recognise. Countless prostrations tremble upon my humble brow, yearning to be offered to You.

Mystically, this is the soul’s longing for the Invisible Beloved to become perceptible. The seeker’s devotion overflows into a plea for His presence; in a spiritual reading, that presence may be recognised through the living Murshid or Satguru.

Do not guard your mirror so carefully: yours is a mirror that becomes dearer to its Maker when it is broken.

The mirror represents the heart. Its breaking signifies the surrender of pride, self-importance, and the illusion of independence. A heart softened by love and longing becomes receptive to Divine grace. The Beloved cherishes the humility through which the seeker ceases to place the self at the centre.

Love no longer carries its former fire, nor beauty its playful charm; Ghaznavi no longer burns with longing, nor do Ayaz’s curls hold their former enchantment.

Ghaznavi and Ayaz evoke the lover and the beloved. Mystically, the verse laments a fading intensity of love: when yearning weakens, even the beloved’s beauty seems to lose its power. The seeker is called to revive the inward ardour that makes remembrance alive and draws the heart towards surrender.

Whenever I bowed my head in prostration, a voice arose from the earth: “Your heart remains attached to idols—what will you gain from prayer?”

Mystically, the verse asks for sincerity in worship, so that outward prostration becomes an inward surrender to the One.
