SHABAD GURU SURAT DHUN CHELA
शबद गुरु सुरत धुन चेला ॥ (Stanza 44 of SIDH Gosht page 943 SGGS)
=========================================================
This mystic utterance is an integral part of SIDH GOSHT, which
appears as a dialogue between the Sidhs and Guru Nanak Sahib. The
beauty of this dialogue (page 938-946 of SGGS) is that supplementary questions
and answers add to the emphasis and clarity on the highest mystical perception.
Sidhs
are yogis attempting to accomplish God’s realization as per their ancient
practices and question Guru Sahib whether their path of asceticism of keeping
themselves secluded or excluded from the world will help them attain God-realization[1].
Siddha (सिद्ध) in Sanskrit
is understood as “perfected one who is accomplished”. It refers to an individual(s)
who have achieved a high degree of physical and metaphysical perfection for
paranormal capabilities called “Siddi” सिद्दी. Sidhs are also called Naths, Yogis, and
Awdhoo and have multiple ways of attaining magical powers- Siddis.
MEANING OF THE VERSE--शबद गुरु सूरत धुन चेला—
1.
There are five words in this line, and
each word has deep introspective meaning rather than superficial understanding.
2. Guru Nanak
sahib explains that neither the seeker’s body is the real seeker nor the body
of the Guru or mystic is the tangible Guru.
3. The Shabad
manifested or blessed within the body of Satguru is the real Guru, and the
soul(surat) of the seeker, which is connected with Shabad, is the actual
disciple. However, the disciple remains unaware of this spiritual connectivity
because the intensity of Shabad diminishes in the soul ( surat) due to layers
of mind, Maya, and material attachments.
4. The physical
bodies of the Guru and the disciple are the essential means of self-realization
or God-realization (for the shishya). Thus, both Guru and seeker have to be
physically present in the current time and space in this process of
Self-realization.
5. The word Dhun
pertains to the transcendental vibrations of the Shabad resonating both within
the Guru and the soul ( surat).
What
is Shabad? –
Shabad is synonyms to the Lord, God, Creator, Nam, and
the Creative Power that is the basis of the entire creation. It is
reverberating energy in all living and non-living beings—both seen and unseen. Guru Sahib explains the Shabad
as
शबदे धरती शबदे आकाश ॥ शबदे शब्द भया प्रकाश ॥ सगली सृष्टि शबद के पाछे ॥ नानक शब्द घटे घट आछे ॥Guru Amar Das Ji also
refers as उत्पात परलो शबदे हॉवए ॥ शबदे ही फिर ओपत होवे ॥
The concept of Shabad defined in the SGGS may not be
confused with mere reading, recitations, or singing with musical instruments. That
is a devotion of the external dimension, but unless it leads to a conviction of
having inner experience, it does not help the soul attain salvation.
Humanity is blessed with the same Shabad (like a ray of
the sun) but remains unaware of this great blessing. The realization of the
Shabad is Self-Realizations or God-Realization.
The Shabad in human form is an amalgamation of mind/ Maya,
five elements, and three Gunna.
Shabad ( Satnam) is intelligent vibrational energy (Karta-Purakh).
So in that respect, God, Shabad, Guru, Energy have the same implied meaning. Such
energy, when solidified or liquefied or rarefied, becomes matter. And matter
when unsolidified, non-liquified, or non-rarified becomes energy. There is
constant transmutation of energy and matter in all forms of existence that continues
as per the Divine plan. Each particle or sub-particle is imbued with
vibrational energy. The totality of energy is infinite.
Imagine the energy in radioactive stony substances like Uranium[2].
WHAT IS GURU?
The transcendental resonance of the Shabad is Guru—therefore, “Shabad Guru”
has intertwined implications. Guru ordinarily is understood as the one who
dispels the ignorance of the human mind and has access to the domains beyond the
mind.
Here the reference is both to the
Shabad Guru and the living Guru or the “Word made flesh”. The living Guru has experienced the Shabad by
inner revelation as a blessing from the Lord and not by the acquiring wisdom or
knowledge through books or hearsay--Kabir/ Guru Nanak Sahib
and Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) state the following revelations about
God.
1. कह कबीर हम धुर के भेदी हुकम हजूरी लाये—कबीर
2. जैसे में आवे खसम की बानी तेस्ड़ा करूँ ज्ञान वे लालो—गुरु नानक
3. ला इलाही इल अल्लाह मुहम्मद रासुल्लाह—मुहम्मद साहिब
[1] (Finally In 72nd stanzas, Guru Sahib explains
his path of Gurmat, the Shabad or Nam Bhakti to rein the delusion, illusions,
confusions of the wandering mind by the grace of the living Guru. which we will
be mentioned at the end of this narrative.)
[2]
Shabad is sustaining the cosmic existence
–its energy is inestimable.
A 750 gm of atomic bomb (called the Little Boy) dropped in 1945 in Japan,
unleashed the concentrated destructive power of radioactive stones).
